Art is about the exchange of dialogue which takes place between the viewer and the maker, it is something that is not always spoken, but consistently sensed. Within my work I establish an introspective discourse with the viewer and the piece. My work explores the dynamic environment which we inhabit and, often overlook, by examining the inherent details of common occurrences. Concepts surrounding views of space, architecture, environment, the individual and social perceptions within our present society are my primary influences.
Sensitivity to materials is a significant aspect when conceptualizing and visualizing my work for its final outcome. The use of non-traditional sculptural materials functions as a way to activate multiple senses and ideas for the viewer. I feel that by using alternative material choices within my work I am able to take a more common substance and elevate it to another level that enables layers of meaning that might not have previously been thought of. I seek to make viewers aware that every material and object has the potential to express a meaning with a multitude of layers of conceptuality. Through the coupling of installation and performance in my pieces I am able to create an environment where my artwork is able to exist within its own specific context and allows itself to be transformed and manipulated by the performer.
I hope to give my audience a sense of wonder and delight by blending Pop related images that use techniques of repetition, excess and multiplicity; such as a simple plaid pattern, with both abstract form and design into installations, large scale sculptural objects, digital videos and performances. I have discovered that my work is becoming more and more about giving the viewer an experience where he/she is able to forget about the world that is around them on a daily basis and shift their focus into a space where a new reality is before them to simply enjoy.
